"Diapers be damned!" interrupted Kori, making a rare lapse into strong language. "When I say I don't want you taking care of Jeep, I expect to be obeyed, do you understand?"

Poor Jeep, wakened by the noise, began to whimper.

"Maybe we should continue this out of the baby's sleeping room," suggested Mary.

Kori went to lift Jeep gently out of his crib. "Mary, will you take him? Take him to your bedroom; he'll go right back to sleep if you sit with him a minute."

"Of course." Mary took Jeep and wove her way through Jill, Peter – and Frank, who looked anxiously after her, though he did not follow.
